85 cfs @ Junction, 55 cfs @ Mason, 80 cfs @ Llano. The Llano has for the most part, settled into its wintertime pattern. The reports that we have heard from the lower river (Castell and down) have been less than exciting. There have been fish caught but just not in the numbers that we like to see around this time of year. Junction is probably a better bet seeing as the flows were more consistent throughout the summer and the fish didn’t experience as much stress due to low flows. The fishing techniques will stay virtually the same throughout the entire river this time of year. Focus on fishing deeper pools that the fish will winter in and fish near the bottom with streamers, large nymphs, and crayfish patterns. In the event that we have a warm sunny day, look for fish that have pushed into shallow water to sun themselves — these fish are spooky but will often eat a well presented streamer fly.
On a side note, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be stocking rainbow trout in two different locations on the Llano River this winter. They will stock Grenwelge Park in Llano on December 21, 2011 and South Llano River State Park in Junction on December 13, 2011 and February 1, 2012.
